Kerry David - Filmmaker Bio

Filmmaker, Kerry David, began her career at Paramount Pictures learning all about the contractual side of filmmaking. The following three years were exclusively working for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman on films that included; Mission Impossible 2, Without Limits, Portrait of a Lady, Peacemaker, Practical Magic, The Blue Room, and Eyes Wide Shut with legendary director Stanley Kubrick.

Kerry left TC and NK and soon started her own production company, producing, writing, directing and/or raising funds for her projects. Her first project was the award-winning featurette; Deposing the Usual Suspects (MGM), then Agent Cody Banks and Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London (MGM), Perfect Romance (Lifetime), and the critically acclaimed; My Date with Drew. Expert Insight: Short Game Golf with Jim Furyk & Fred Funk followed, winning a Telly-Award for Outstanding Instructional Content and Cinematic Excellence. This was followed by NY Times bestseller, Like Dandelion Dust (Fox) starring Mira Sorvino, Barry Pepper and Cole Hauser, written by friend and Oscar nominee, Stephen J. Rivele.

Making Miles - The Miles Davis Story (HBO) came next, followed by; Seeking Happily Ever After (Lionsgate Films), which she Co-Directed, and was one of only 25 films accepted into the Sundance Film Lab that year. It was also selected by Stanford University’s law department as a study case for ‘Fair Use’.

From 2010-2013 Kerry took a leave of absence from Hollywood to build a musical village for orphans in Ghana, West Africa. Never far from her filmmaking roots, she produced several mini docs about the school and the children to raise funds and awareness back in the United States.  After completing the orphanage, Kerry returned back to her first passion of filmmaking.

In 2017, Kerry added directing to her filmmaking roles, and took on her now award-winning feature documentary; Bill Coors: The Will to Live. “Bill Coors: WTL” documented the impressive, but deeply troubled private life of the brewing titan's battle with depression and anxiety, and his dedication to finding a holistic cure.

In 2017, Kerry came face to face with the devastating effects that commercial poaching and illegal wildlife trade had on endangered species in Africa.  She was moved to create Over and Above Africa, a 501c3 non-profit that protects vulnerable wildlife in Africa, and the communities they impact.  Meeting some of Africa’s powerful women who were advocating for these beautiful creatures, she was inspired to write, produce and direct the now multiple award-winning; Breaking Their Silence: Women on the Frontline of the Poaching War. Kerry was asked to give a TEDx Talk about her experience making, Breaking Their Silence, which was featured in segments on The Today Show, CNN, and the BBC, and People Magazine, Huffington Post, , Parade Magazine among others.

In 2019 Kerry relocated to North Carolina where she was approached to write, produce, and direct, “Open Secret,” a documentary that initially investigated systemic racism and child sexual abuse in New Hanover County, dating back decades. It has since revealed itself to be a cautionary tale about the power of unchecked local government and elected officials.  Corruption and collusion in a cover-up culture.  In the wrong hands, power can and does, devastate families and  communities.

Midway through 2022, Hallmark green lit Kerry's long championed feature film; "The Road Ahead" by friend, Erin Engman.  A fictional drama about two women from different generations and diverse backgrounds, who heal each other's broken lives, redefining the definition of family during a road trip across the US.

Kerry has been a guest speaker at schools and universities around the globe; including University of Southern California, University of California at Los Angeles, Pepperdine University, and the New York Film Academy.  She has written numerous articles for various industry magazines and online platforms and to date, Kerry’s films worldwide have accumulated north of $90 million.
